Should You Train When Sick?
The neck rule for training through illness, what the evidence really says about "short and intense" sick workouts, and a note on hydration.
Should you train when sick
This was a very busy and fun week for me. I took a bit of a vacation since my mom and brother were in town for my son’s first birthday! 📷Photos will be coming soon to instagram.
If you have any recommendations, questions, feedback, feel free to reply to this e-mail.
Dose of the week
A question I asked myself many times when I started working out in medical school was “Should I train when I have a sore throat?”
The answer is not that simple, and ultimately, you should listen to your body. The more experienced you are, the more you understand how your body really is. However, a useful rule of thumb is the neck rule, which I described in this video or you can read this article.
I recently saw a post saying that when sick, you should make your training sessions shorter — and more intense. While this sounds convincing, there is no scientific evidence for that claim. Read more.
My recommendation: if you have any systemic symptoms, with fever being a big one, you should rest and recover. Respect your body and keep it hydrated.
Speaking of water
Do you know exactly how much water should you be drinking? Should I make a video about it? 💧
My open diary
I’m not sure how many of you know this, but I couldn’t find a job after my residency and master’s that would sponsor my visa. I guess prevention isn’t a big priority in Medicine yet.
So I created the company that you see at the footer of this e-mail with my wife and we will self-sponsor a different type of visa for me - O1 instead of H1b. The documentation and petition will be submitted next week and I am anxious about it… If everything works as expected, I will explain more about what this company**is and the plans we have for the future. Hint: The social media branch is certainly part of it😉
Anyhow, this upcoming week I will focus on cholesterol education, and possibly hydration. So stay tuned.
